TCU women’s tennis ranked 36th in first ITA poll

Horned Frogs to welcome Katariina Tuohimaa to team for Spring 2008 season.

The TCU women's tennis team earned a No. 36 ranking in the season's first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll released on Tuesday. Two Frogs appeared in the singles rankings, while the doubles duo of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska also earned recognition.

TCU sophomore Nina Munch-Soegaard earned a singles ranking of No. 66 after leading the team in the fall with a 10-3 record. Munch-Soegaard won nine straight matches, including a five-match stretch where the Amarillo, Texas product claimed The Racquet Club Invitational title.

Anna Sydorska, a junior from Lviv, Ukraine, will enter the 2008 season with a singles ranking of No. 80. Sydorska recorded a 3-2 mark during the fall, including a straight-sets win over No. 40 Pavla Mesterova of Loyola Marymount.

The doubles duo of Harkins and Sydorska garnered a No. 18 national ranking after posting a 7-3 record in the fall. The Frog pair advanced to the finals of the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championship and earned a trip to the ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, where they knocked off the No. 3 ranked team to advance to the semifinals.

Tuohimaa joins Frogs for Spring 2008

Katariina Tuohimaa, a native of Helsinki, Finland, will join the TCU women's tennis team for the start of the 2008 season. Tuohimaa will be one of three freshmen to compete during the spring season.

"Katariina is an excellent player and student," said TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "She is an excellent doubles player and has great experience. We are very happy about her joining the team and being a part of a really neat group of student-athletes."

Tuohimaa, who holds an ITF Juniors career-high combined ranking of No. 113, won the Oslo Indoor tournament in 2005. Tuohimaa played in the Fed Cup for Finland and competed at Junior Wimbledon and the Junior U.S. Open in 2006.

Tuohimaa has won five ITF Circuit doubles titles and also advanced to the singles finals of the ITF Women's Circuit in Ramat Hasharon, Israel. Tuohimaa holds a career-high WTA singles ranking of No. 730 and a career-high doubles ranking of No. 481.

The TCU women's tennis team will open the 2008 season against No. 24 Texas in Austin on Feb. 9 at 12 p.m.
