Plano-based MediaCart Holdings teams with Microsoft on new shopping cart
The new cart will soon allow you to scan and pay for your food as you go, at the cost of constant advertising temptation.
Plano-based MediaCart Holdings is finally going to have their baby see the light of day: Their four-year partnership with Microsoft to give you a shopping cart that'll tell you what to shop for is coming to fruition thanks to Microsoft's acquisition of aQuantive, an online advertising company, last year. Even though they've been talking about it for almost a year now, this was the final step that now allows them to beam advertising directly into your brain onto a screen attached to your grocery cart to let you know that, "Hey, frozen pizzas sound pretty good. And whaddya know? They're 50 cents off!"
The cart will also allow you to scan and pay for your items without waiting in line, which to me is more than worth the annoyance of them trying to get me to buy food I don't want or need. Unfortunately, even though they're just up the road (or in my case, right next door -- what up, Plano? Woot!), the plan for now is for MediaCarts to only be tested in ShopRites on the East Coast.
(Thanks to Marisa TreviƱo for the heads-up)
