Dallas city officials considering stronger animal laws

Email Print Tell us your story Comments (3)

In perhaps a case of "Oh, crap, I guess we'd better get on this, too," the Dallas Animal Shelter Commission is set to consider a variety of proposals, from some that would help control the pet population to one that would ban tethering unsupervised animals to trees or posts.

Whereas Fort Worth is already voting on similar laws (and Irving and Austin have already enacted them), Dallas is just now in the consideration phase by a commission, which would then have to make a recommendation to the city council, which would...oh, you get the point. Dallas, it'll be a while.

I enjoy the fact cowtown is more progressive when it comes to enacting law for pet protection, seeing it has the "old west code" asthetic. But Dallas, the shining city on the hill, is once again slow to draw on these type of quality of life issues. It'll probably get dragged down by one of the clowns from south of the river, claming its instutional racism because they're too poor to afford yard fencing or getting their dog fixed, Perhaps Mitchell Razansky will make one of his typical stinks, because we all know he hates anything that changes the ebb and flow of how people should behave.

God I wish we had Mike Moncrief running this city, at least we'd get things done

At least they are talking about the problem of pet overpopulation and animal cruelty. That's more than they've done in the 20 years I've lived here.

Let's take this opportunity to make our voices heard. Attend the Dallas City Council meeting Wed 4/2 at 9 am at City Hall.

If you can't be there, write your council person and tell them that Dallas' escalating stray problem and euthanasia rate is unacceptable to you.

Akira Sato Jazz trumpeter Akira Sato, by way of Tokyo, Japan and Vancouver, Canada, is an SMU faculty member and director of The Meadow Jazz Orchestra at SMU. He is also an adjunct faculty member at UNT where he teaches jazz arranging. Sato is also heading into the studio soon with other area musicians and playing at the Scat Jazz Lounge tonight. With all that he's up to, the least you could do is order a Scotch on the rocks and chill to some tunes. (Photo by flickr user arteunporro. More info
