Computer tape with information on customers of Plano-based JC Penney is missing
Tape, which also had data on customers of about 100 other major retailers, included some social security numbers.
A computer backup tape with information on customers of J.C. Penney is missing from where it should be at GE Money, which handles credit card accounts for J.C. Penney and about 100 other stores.
The tape was being stored at a data storage warehouse and included personal information on about 650,000 customers, some of that being social security numbers for 150,000 customers. The tape wasn't checked out of the warehouse but they can't find it.

CastleHills, says:
I recommend to everyone a service by Equifax called Credit Watch Gold with 3-in-1 monitoring. I've had it for 3 years now, and it works great. You can set a level for your credit card balances, so that if they jump more than that, Equifax will call you on your cell phone. Also, they alert you by text if any new accounts are opened in your credit file. You get free credit reports with this service. In this day and age, you need this...you never know when some idiot company is going to hand your private data over to some thief.
And NO, I don't work for Equifax. The service ain't cheap, but to me it's worth the peace of mind.
