MLK at SMU: March 1966

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke at a convocation in McFarlin Auditorium on the Southern Methodist University campus in March of 1966. Thanks to Dallasite Gene Halaburt - who brought his tape recorder to the event - the speech has been preserved and can now be heard online.

(Two versions are available: this .wma file, and this one in iPod-friendly .mp3 format.)

SMU is making the recording available as part of its week-long Martin Luther King, Jr. tribute. Today (Jan. 21), participating students, faculty and staff are engaging in a Day of Service designed to "bring people together who might not ordinarily meet."

Succeeding days events are as follows:

* Tuesday, Jan. 22: MLK birthday party at noon in The Commons at Hughes-Trigg Student Center

* Wednesday, Jan. 23: Unity walk starting at noon at the Perkins Chapel and ending at the Hughes-Trigg Commons

* Thursday, Jan. 24: Screening of Dare Not Walk Alone: The War of Responsibility, a film about the "war of ideas" in St. Augustine, FL that led to the passage of the first civil rights bill on July 2 of 1964

* Friday, Jan. 25: Unity mixer featuring food, fun and fellowship, at 6 p.m. in the Hughes-Trigg Varsity

* Saturday, Jan. 26: MLK Kid's Day, featuring a display of talent by youth from the North Texas area, sponsored by SMU's Association of Black Students

Unless otherwise noted, all events are sponsored by SMU Student Activities and Multicultural Student Affairs.

The Trains at NorthPark Oh, no! Godzilla got into the Northpark train exhibit! But don't worry, the engineers will have it back up and running in time for your mall visit. And now, BEFORE the big holiday rush, is the best time to see them, before hundreds of drooling children take over the enclosure after Thanksgiving. More info
