When Texas Christian University's bookstore moved its operation (including its inventory) from the old Tom Thumb grocery building into temporary portable buildings so the space could be expanded and remodeled, fate took a big bad hand: a welder's torch was left on and the place burned down.

Since the March 2006 fire, it's been a bit of a hoop-jumping exercise for GM Llisa Lewis and her loyal staff (most of whom are either TCU or Paschal High School students) - they've had to deal with moving in and out of various buildings while still serving the book-buying needs of their clientèle.

Earlier this month the new TCU bookstore - housed in a purpose-built 34,000 sq. ft. two-story Barnes & Noble-partnered facility - opened its doors to show customers what a fabulous book shopping experience they were in for.

A few kinks are still being worked out - more parking will be coming online soon, and the soda pump in the café needs some calibrating - but all things considered, Llisa and her crew are pretty happy. As she puts it: "It has the Barnes & Noble relaxed, in-the-neighborhood feel combined with the best university in the world. What's not to like?"

What, indeed?

Store hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m Monday through Friday; Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Here's their website.
