TCU swimming and diving cruises over Centenary
The TCU men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined for 11 new Centenary Fitness Center records as both teams cruised to victory on Saturday. The men's team (6-3) won by a score of 95-88, while the women's squad (5-7) took a 102-73 decision.
"I feel really good about how we competed on the road today," said TCU head coach Richard Sybesma. "Anytime you're setting pool records you're on the right path."
On the men's side, senior Scott McCracken was responsible for two new pool records, the first coming as the Houston, Texas, native won the 100-free event in a time of 47.34. McCracken led off the 200-free relay team with a time of 21.07, setting a new mark in the 50-free. The team of McCracken, Jonathon Berrettini, Josh Bagby and Josh Schifferer went on to set a new best with a time of 1:24.56.
Jason Hauck, Jeff Gettel and Ben Biefnes also broke pool records on Saturday. Hauck, a junior from Eden Prairie, Minn., grabbed his first event win of the season in the 200-fly with a time of 1:55.75. Gettel took the 200-back event with a time of 1:51.57, while Biefnes swam to victory in the 200-breast with a clocking of 2:10.17.
The women's squad recorded five new pool records, beginning with the 200-medley relay team of Brittney Martinez, Ellie Bradley, Mychala Lynch and Nikki Pappas, who posted a time of 1:51.24.
Freshman Jessica Miles captured her sixth event win of the year by recording a time of 2:10.38 in the 200-fly. Cheryl Townsend grabbed first in the 200-back with a time of 2:08.84, while senior Katie Rosen placed first in the 200-breast with a clocking of 2:27.26.
The women ended the meet on a positive note, as the 200-free relay team of Lynch, Martinez, Meredith Grubb and Pappas set a pool record with a time of 1:40.36.
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams will both compete at the University Recreation Center next weekend. The men's team will meet No. 24 SMU on Friday at 6 p.m., while the women's team will face New Mexico at 12 p.m. The TCU seniors will be recognized before each contest.
