The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra brings together the spicy rhythms of Latin America and the exotic flavor of the One Thousand and One Arabian Nights in three exciting concerts Feb. 22-24 at Bass Performance Hall.
The concerts open with the FWSO’s second installment of the highly acclaimed Caminos del Inka, a spectacular multimedia event that combines traditional Peruvian music with stunning images of the Inca Trail. Featured works will include Martinez Y Campanon’s "Colección de música virreinal" and Gabriela Frank’s "Illapa: Tone Poem for Flute and Orchestra" with soloist Jessica Warren. One of Rimsky-Korsakov’s most beloved works, "Scheherazade, Opus 35," closes the concert. This beautiful music is based on the tales told by the princess Scheherazade, represented by a solo violin, in her effort to postpone the sentence of death declared on her by her master, the Caliph. Music Director Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducts.
The performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Come early for Casual, Chic Friday and enjoy cocktails and pre-concert entertainment with the Tarub Belly Dancers starting at 6:45 p.m. Casual, Chic Friday concerts have no intermission and end at approximately 9 p.m., so patrons are free to enjoy the rest of the evening on the town. All patrons are invited to learn more about the music at Symphonic Insights, featuring composer-in-residence Gabriela Frank, which starts one hour before each concert in the audience chamber.
Jessica Warren is an avid soloist, chamber musician and orchestral flutist. She is the principal flutist of the Boise Symphony and spends her summers as the principal flutist of the Central City Opera in Colorado. She was also a member of the New World Symphony, Omaha Symphony and has appeared with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. As a soloist and teacher she has performed at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall and at international festivals such as the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, Academie du Nice Summer Festival Recital Series in France, Temporada Flautística in Lima, Festival en la Mitad del Mundo in Ecuador and the National Flute Association conventions in Chicago and Atlanta. She has toured Latin America as an artistic ambassador to the United States Embassy, soloing with orchestras and performing in recital. She began studying the flute at age 10 and attended the Manhattan School of Music, Southern Methodist University, and Purchase College and Conservatory of Music.
These concerts are made possible, in part, by the generous support of American Airlines. Promotional support is provided by the Star-Telegram and WRR Classical 101.1 FM.
