North Texas senior Hannah Bakke has been honored as the Sun Belt Conference Swimmer of the Week following a record-setting weekend against the University of Houston and Rice University.
Bakke, a senior from Little Rock, Ark., set a new pool record at the Pohl Recreation Center against Houston over the weekend as she finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke. Bakke’s mark of 1:05:36 bested the old record of 1:05:41 set in 2007 by Texas A&M’s Chelsea Helgason.
Bakke helped lead the Mean Green past the University of Houston for the first time in the program's 10-year history. North Texas was 0-13 against Houston prior to Friday's win over the Cougars. Bakke followed Friday's performance up with a first place finish in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke against Rice University the next day.
Bakke is the fourth Mean Green swimmer to earn SBC Swimmer of the Week accolades so far this season. Teammate Alicia Hale has taken home the honor twice this season, while Bonnie Garcia-Meitin won the award earlier in the year.
The North Texas swimming and diving team will have the next two weeks off before traveling to Fort Worth to compete against TCU. The Mean Green has already knocked off the Horned Frogs twice this season; once at the Mean Green Relays and again at the UNLV Invite.
