SMU men’s tennis falls to Texas, 5-2
The No. 47 SMU men's tennis team kicked off its spring schedule by facing No. 7 Texas. Robin Fahgen and Adolfo Solares both won hard-fought matches, but the Mustangs were unable to overturn the Longhorns and dropped the match, 5-2.
The Longhorns outplayed SMU in doubles, picking up the point with consecutive victories over all three Mustang pairs. David Kuczer and Solares got closest in the No. 2 position, but Reyes Varela/Chodkiewicz picked up the win, 8-6.
In singles action, No. 81 Kuczer faced No. 53 Dimitar Kutrovsky and fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Fahgen pulled off a major upset, stealing the match from No. 24 Kellen Damico. Fahgen won the first set, 6-4, but Damico fought back to take the second, 6-4. In the decisive third set, Fahgen put Damico away, 1-0 (6). Alex Skrypko was taken down by No. 52 Ed Corrie, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, while Oivind Alver fell to Luis Diaz Barriga in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
At No. 5 singles, Solares defeated Miguel Reyes Varela in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 (4). Chris Hooshyar fell to Milan Mihailovic at No. 6, 6-2, 6-4.
The Mustangs are back in action Saturday, Feb. 2 and Sunday, Feb. 3 as they host a pair of double-headers. On Saturday, SMU will welcome Illinois State at 11:30am and Prairie View A&M at 3:30pm. Sunday, the Mustangs will face Abilene Christian at noon and Southeastern Oklahoma at 3:30pm. All matches will be held at the Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas.
