Interview with Theresa Ferrell, Director of Fences

Last year, Theresa Ferrell directed Crowns for Denton Community Theatre and it went on to win a national award. This week, Denton Community Theatre is opening the Pulitzer Prize-winning Fences which she is directing, so it was perfect timing for an interview.

We start off by talking about her theater career and how she got involved with Denton Community Theatre. I ask her about Crowns, and what got it to the nationally-acclaimed level.

Fences

  • When: Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, 7:30 p.m.
  • Where: Campus Theatre, 214 West Hickory Street, Denton
  • Cost: $10 - $17
  • Age limit: Not available

I ask her about Fences, why the play was chosen, and what got her to direct it. She talks about the changes she made to script due to the racial slurs and profanity. Also, since the lead character, Troy Maxson, is quite a rough character, I ask her how she was able to make him likable so the audience would feel for him. We end by talking about what she ultimately wants the audience to get out of the show after leaving the theater.

The show runs from February 1 - 10, and tickets can be reserved by calling 940-382-1915.
