Gay List Daily’s July theater recommendations
Okay, we admit it. We are totally boy crazy (but you knew that already). Well it turns out the entire North Texas theatre community is gaga about the guys this month, too. There are shows about cowboys, tap-dancing boy friends, boy bands and even boys who are a little reluctant to head to the altar. July may prove to be even more exciting than that autographed copy of Tiger Beat we have with Mario Lopez on the cover. Grrrr.
Steady As He Goes: The Boyfriend
Through Sunday, July 13
While it may not portray the roaring ’20s with the same sex appeal as Chicago, any dyed-in-the-wool musical lover knows that this show has all the fun of an old-school classic. Visions of tap dancers and pirouettes are already dancing through our heads.
Tickets: $20; Theatre Arlington; www.theatrearlington.org
Boy Oh Boy: Jersey Boys
Opens Wednesday, July 23
You know what’s better than a biopic? Biopic: The Musical! But unlike other epic stories with songs you’ve never heard, Jersey Boys follows the rise to fame of The Four Seasons. (You know, Frankie Valli and those three other guys). Get ready to croon along with classics like “Earth Angel,” “Let’s Hang On” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.” Dibs on singing the really high falsetto part!
Tickets: $25 - $124; Music Hall at Fair Park; www.dallassummermusicals.org
Can’t BARDLY Wait: All’s Well That Ends Well
Through Friday, July 25
Note to self: pack a picnic, bug spray and Shakespeare-to-English dictionary to keep up with this tale of secret love, bartered favors and bed swapping. Hmm, which goes better with iambic pentameter, red wine or white?
Friday & Saturday; $10 adults, $7 students and seniors; Tuesday – Thursday & Sunday; admission is donation-based; Shakespeare Dallas; Samuell-Grand Amphitheatre; www.shakespearedallas.org
Ride ‘em, Cowboy: The Will Rogers Follies
Opens Friday, July 25
Apparently entertainer Will Rogers was once quoted as saying, “I never met a man I didn’t like.” Hey, that’s our line – but only at last call. If you love a superfluous chorus girl (and really, who doesn’t), then this is your show. Just sit back and let the kick lines begin.
Tickets: $26; Garland Summer Musicals; Granville Arts Center; www.garlandsummermusicals.org
