Dillard’s next up in Valley View Center exodus
The Dillard's department store in Valley View Center will close at the end of August, joining Macy's, which closed in March, in an exodus that looks to forever change the once-venerable mall.
Both Dillard's and Macy's are opening up branches at The Village at Fairview, a new complex that is of little help to Valley View lovers since it's located around 20 miles north of there. Macerich Company, which owns Valley View, has been known to redevelop older enclosed malls, even going so far as to tear them down and start anew. Since Valley View is in a prime location, it might be wise to start counting the days toward its demise.

I made a brief visit to ol' Valley View a few months back on a Saturday and I was surprised at how dead the place was. I went there again today after reading about Macy's and now Dillard's closing. I'm sorry to say that this mall doesn't stand a chance of surviving in it's current structure. I don't think it can be revamped in any way, sadly. Aside from vacant anchor spaces, I saw a surprisingly high number of vacant store spaces in the rest of the mall. A lot of these shuttered stores were being used as showcase displays for other stores. The newer AMC theater stands out as the one area that is "too good" for the rest of the environment. In hindsight, it's a shame that they didn't build the theater after Macy's or Dillard's closed as an attempt to fill their former spaces. At this point, what anchors could possibly fill these spaces and actually generate new interest? What major retailers are even available options? As much as I loved this place as a kid throughout the 80's, I am pretty sure that I won't be returning to VV in the future, unless a miracle revamp is somehow accomplished. The amount of reworking that is needed wouldn't justify the costs, in my opinion. I think it's only a matter of time before this place gets demolished and is rebuilt as an open-air strip mall and/or housing, as was the case for both Prestonwood Mall and Richardson Square Mall.

what the heck is a "mall"?
oh, wait - isn't it that overpriced place that is now reduced to dollar stores and "tiendas por las ventas"?
