New product Wednesday, at Dallas-area liquor stores: patriotic Pommery Pop champagne
Pommery's POP (Product of Pommery) America is about as shameless as it gets. POP is a single-serving bottle of champagne -- basically, a generous glassful -- that first came out in 1999. It's always tinkered with traditional champagne-bottle packaging, initially coming out in a pretty cobalt-blue bottle with silver label, with a straw for sipping attached. It subsequently branched out into 4-packs and a rose version.
This one has a red, white, and blue wrapper with stars and stripes. Because it is almost July 4, see. Patriotic. Undoubtedly conceived for summertime picnics. Silly, maybe, but Pommery makes good champagne and people respond to silly things like red-white-and-blue packaging.
It's a limited-edition item, so don't expect to see much of it sitting around after 4th of July.

Is this a French product? With Stars and Stripes?
Shameless, indeed.

French and a little too sweet for my champagne tastes. They also sell singles. I was taken in by the silliness on New Years Eve by the adorable little bottles - Blue for boys and pink for girls. But I must say, it was a very good night!

Is there a champagne that's not French?

Korbel Champagne Cellars of California has “continued it’s pursuit of excellence for more than 120 years.” First their fries, then their bubbly…what next?

Interesting. I was under the impression that champagne was by definition from a specific region in France.

The Statue of Liberty was given to us by the French and they ran the naval blockade to keep the British out during the Revolutionary War so I suppose this is OK.

Yes, David. Technically speaking for something to be called champagne it must be from the Champagne region France. However, there are legal workarounds in the US - which is what initially prompted my question.
Much like true 100% agave tequila must be bottled in Mexico.

David, you are correct... if its not from the champagne region of France, it can't legally be called champagne and is usually called sparkling wine (or something similar).

Interesting. I was under the impression we are supposed to call it Freedom Juice.

jtmbls - there are legal workarounds in the US to still call it champagne - but if you want the real thing, it comes from France.
Freedom Fries go great with Freedom Juice!

Yeah, they say the same thing about spaghetti and Italy.
Established in 1882, Korbel Champagne Cellars has been a part of America’s greatest celebrations for more than 120 years. It has been the exclusive champagne of the past five presidential inaugurations, and was the champagne of choice for the Camelot years of the Kennedy administration.
If it's good enough for JFK...

Sorta. Any new "sparkling wine" in the US after 2006 cannot legally be called champagne.

I hope we are able to find this fun champagne in our area. We toured the Pommery winery in April and enjoyed it very much and thought the champagne was excellent. We can't wait to go back and see more of a beautiful country.
