Many around the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex are choosing to keep their fireworks spending habit normal this Fourth of July, despite the increased costs of, well, just about everything, including the fireworks themselves. Most retailers are reporting sales that are about as expected or are above average, with many purchases coming in at around the $100 range.
Look, I like fireworks as much as the next guy, but it's a little hard for me to want to spend hundreds of dollars on something that would be fun for, oh, about five minutes. Of course, I don't have kids -- maybe it's easier to do it just to see the looks on their faces.

What is it with Texans and fireworks? Growing up in the North, all I ever had access to were sparklers and the fireworks were left to the professionals. Was I a sheltered child, or is it really as different as I perceive it to be? It seems like every family down here has to have their own display.

$100 worth of artillery shells can go a long way. Especially if you have a body of water to throw them on (fuse is waterproof, explosion on surface of water is pretty awesome, etc).
Not to mention, roman candle wars are always amusing (fun is directly correlated to inebriation, btw).
This explains everything:
