July is a little light on art openings, as things tend to slow down for the summer, but that just means that more people will attend the same openings, right? Who needs fireworks and barbecue?
July 4-6
- Dallas photographer and gallery owner Van Ditthavong is opening a show at the Landmark Magnolia. "Portrait of the American Dream" opened the 3rd, and the photographs will remain on view during theater hours until August.
- 14th Street Gallery is opening their July show Fierce. The show will feature over 39 artists, with a reception on the 5th and is curated by J.R. Compton of the Dallas Arts Revue. The nice thing about 14th Street is that it's in Plano, so you don't have to drive all the way into town to catch an art show if you live up along 75. I imagine it's tough getting into town, especially with gas prices this summer.
July 11-13
- The Fort Worth Community Art Center is finishing out the summer with show by Ma Teresa Gomez-Martorell and Lisa Nersesova, among other various exhibits through July and August. A reception will be held for both artists on the 11th.
- Kittrell/Riffkind is opening their annual Goblet Invitational on the 11th. The opening reception doubles as a wine and cheese tasting, with cheeses from the Dallas' Mozzarella Company.
- For those of you in the mid cities, the Arlington Museum of Art is having a reception with David Keens, Texas Artist of the Year. They are also hosting multiple events with the artist throughout the month, including a gallery talk and museum visit and tour.
- This is the last weekend to check out Prepared Americans at Kettle Art.
- The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History is having a weekend full of celebrations in July, starting on Thursday the 11th with a topping out ceremony and tour of the new facility. The general public is invited to sign the beam in the plaza outside the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame on Wednesday, July 9 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and again from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. immediately preceding the topping out dedication. On Friday there will be a birthday party for the museum mascot, Dynamo and on Saturday a free concert by children's singer Eddie Coker.
July 25-27
- PDNB is opening Contemporary Czech Photography, featuring photographs from Czech contemporaries (obviously). The exhibit runs through the end of August.
- At the very end of July, Sehnsuct (Aspiration) is opening at Light & Sie. This is a group exhibition of paintings, photographs, video and works on paper organized by Georges Armaos.

Paul Gauguin, Why Are You Angry? (No te aha oe riri), 1896, Oil on canvas, 37 1/2 x 51 3/8 in. (95.3 x 130.55 cm)
- Margo Sawyer explores light, color and architecture at Holly Johnson Gallery. Synchronicity of Color opened in late June and will run through mid August.
- Pan American has a group show running through the middle of the month, Los Cubanos - The New Regime.
- Julian Onderdonk's bluebonnet's will be on display through the 20th at the DMA. I suggest going before closing weekend.
- The Impressionists have finally made it to the Kimbell! I know you've all been waiting for it. From the Art Institute of Chicago, the exhibition features works from impressionist greats such as Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. For anyone that loves impressionist works, this exhibit should be a goody.
- The Nasher Sculpture Center has all kinds of summer activities, with free film showings on Fridays, music on Saturdays and two exhibits running through the end of summer.
