The City of Addison discusses heliports and zip codes

I know you've been waiting for it, and it has finally come. It's time for the Addison City Council meeting again! During the work session, the council will discuss adding a heliport to the Addison Airport (ooh, fancy) and see a presentation regarding the Cavanaugh Flight Museum. During the regular council session, the council will discuss:

  • An upgrade of the city wide WiFi network with a presentation from Red Moon.
  • A discussion about installing video surveillance at the Addison Conference Center.
  • Discussion to make a request the Post Office that all of Addison be under the 75001 zip code. Apparently the part of town south east of Belt Line Road decided to keep the Dallas zip code back in 1998. And this is why when you google map one of those restaurants at Belt Line and the Tollway, it says it's in Dallas. Apparently you can only request zip code changes every 10 years. Another pointless mystery solved.
  • More approvals for city maintence, ie: painting, sidewalk repair, etc etc.

As a resident of Addison for about 8 years I can honestly say that the Red Moon Wifi install while nice in theory has always been a major boondoggle. If you are driving down the road, the signal is very strong. If however you are in a parking lot, in a building, in a park, in a restaurant or anywhere else in Addison the signal is fleeting and weak at best. The rate for Red Moon exceeds what you pay at a local Starbucks (Dunn bros on Beltline and Marsh is free) and very likely only shows a profit at the Addison Conference Center. (I live behind the center and can usually not even find the Red Moon signals)

I like the time that RedMoon decided to squirt ads/javascript into our HTTP streams. It made our job that much more fun!

We're paying them for a bigger connection, by the way - this wasn't free wifi.
