Plano City Council to lay off police officers, firefighters

11 police officers and six firefighters will lose their jobs as part of a citywide strategy to reduce costs in anticipation of a budget shortfall.

Fighting over money in Plano can get ugly.
Fighting over money in Plano can get ugly.

— The Plano City Council has called a special session tonight to establish a new ordinance that will reduce the number of police officers by 11 and firefighters by six. According to Bruce Glasscock, Executive Director of Public Safety Services & Technology Business Center, the layoffs are part of "a strategy to reduce costs in anticipation of budget shortfalls" and are just some of the 35-40 positions that are being eliminated citywide.

In addition to the negative press that Plano has been garnering lately, it doesn't seem like a great time to be a Plano city employee.

These are open positions. No one is getting laid off.

Thanks, lrbox -- when I spoke with Mr. Glasscock, he failed to mention this fact. Guess I need a better contact.
