Colleyville restaurant 62 Main closing Saturday July 12
COLLEYVILLE 62 Main, the highly-rated Colleyville restaurant owned by chef David McMillan, will offer its final service on Saturday July 12.
"This is our last night," McMillan confirmed.
McMillan, who most recently won the 2008 Stainless Steel Chef Competition by D Magazine, admitted he felt some disappointment but was philosophical about the closure.
"We obviously shouldn't have been out here," he said. "The thing is, just this past month, we were in seven publications -- Modern Luxury, the Star Telegram, the DMN, we were all over the place, and still. We have two cooks from San Francisco, including one with two years' experience at [San Francisco restaurant] Jardiniere -- great people, doing great stuff -- but some people get it and some people don't."
After a celebrated tenure as chef at Nana, McMillan opened 62 Main in Colleyville's Town Center in 2005. The restaurant consistently earned raves, but finding an audience in deep suburban Colleyville remained a challenge. McMillan tinkered with the formula, including opening a more casual offshoot in the restaurant's downstairs space.
As for what he'll do next -- "I have lots of things in the fire," he says.
Meanwhile, he'll celebrate with a whopper of a last supper.
"We're sold out, and we had a full night last night," he says. "We were an anchor. We offered a degree of sanity out here for expats -- for people who lived in San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, that was the drive of what we did, those people. But there just weren't quite enough."

Well, shoot. The wife and I just bought a house in Colleyville, and we were looking forward to trying 62 Main as well as the Wednesday night wine events in their bar. Anyone have other dining recs in the nearby vicinity?

The only reason I'm not utterly disappointed by this news is the self-serving hope that McMillan may end up back in Dallas, where his talent would be (at least a little) better appreciated. We probably could've gotten him back much sooner, had we thought to offer the citizens of Colleyville a Cheesecake Factory in trade.

Dallas can keep its Cheesecake Factory, thanks. Please send Lola out to Colleyville. And a Gingerman would be nice, too.

Colby, have no buyers remorse...the people of Colleyville have exceptional taste and I am sure something wonderful will pop up in 62 Main's place despite McMillan's desire to throw Colleyville under the bus for not succeeding. We frequented 62 (about 2x per month)and whether it was a weekend or Thursday night, the restaurant was packed and the bar seemed to do a steady business. By his own admission they were full the weekend he closed, go figure. Maybe the missing ingredient to the recipe for success was not running the business side as well as he could prepare food???

Colby Walton, says:
I won't speculate on what led to 62 Main's closing, but I have no doubts that the citizens of Colleyville have sophisticated palates and the ability to support well-executed concepts. Colleyville_Customer, do you have other local favorites in Grapevine, C'ville or Southlake to recommend?

Colleyville_Customer, says:
Colby,I would have to agree with Teresa...we do not have a ton of choices in Colleyville, particularly within the same higher end experience and price point as 62 Main. Some highlights in Colleyville- JR's for steak, Ruggeri's for Italian, Reposado's or Gloria's for tex-mex. I would agree that Campania in Southlake is an outstanding choice for both good pie and ambiance, although the pizza isn't quite as good as the West Village location. Kirby's in Southlake is a consistently good experience for steak. Also, if you are interested in wine dinners check out the wine tastings with food pairings at Tivoli Wines in Colleyville and Farpointe in Southlake. All that said, 62 Main and David's creativity will be missed by many Colleyville residents.

Thank god! One less pain in the butt chef, with over priced food that needed some serious work on! You were living on borrowed time in the colleyville area! Go home to CA or back to Nana.

David is a good chef but did not know how to manage his business finicals! You can't pull a 6 figure salary for yourself unless you are making that kind of money! Plus why all the extra staff? If no business you go to skeleton staff! I know he had good investors but they can only take a hit like that for so long before you have to stop the bleeding!

A long time coming, the populous of Colleyville (home of the MC Mansion) have a long track record of failing to support the local fair. If you drive through the center where 62 Main was located you will see where many have tried and failed to establish a business in this area. Nice try at duplicating the success of Southlake’s town center; it is unfortunate the citizenry can’t back it up. Given the multiple failures in this area you have to say surviving three years in the doldrums of Colleyville is a success. City Hall may be the next business to close…

While I agree that most of the people in Colleyville and Southlake have a lot more money than taste, it's not as if it's their fault that 62 Main didn't succeed. I live within a few miles of 62 Main, and I dined there once. After BAD service at the bar and at our table, and an incredibly BAD interaction with the manager, we went down the street to Applebee's and had better service. Unfortunately, so many "upscale" restaurant operators think upscale means high-priced, and too many of them are started by so-called award winning chefs who don't know how to run a restaurant, and who have a highly inflated opinion of themselves. I’m only surprised the place didn't closed sooner – that’s what really speaks of the local diners. I suppose this closing will help J.R.'s - just another overrated, overpriced "upscale" restaurant. For the most part, you have to drive to Dallas for a true "upscale" dining experience.
P.S. Area diners - you shouldn't wear flip-flops and t-shirts to "upscale" restaurants.
