“Jaws” to headline McKinney sci fi-comic-gaming convention
Last summer, Chewbacca was in McKinney. This year, “Jaws” will be signing autographs and visiting with attendees of the Lazy Dragon Con, a three-day “relaxicon” (party convention) for sci-fi, comic book and gaming enthusiasts set for July 18-20.
Richard “Jaws” Kiel (Moonraker, Happy Gilmore) heads the long list of media guests appearing at the three-day event being held for the second year at the McKinney’s Quality Inn. Returning this year are guest favorites from last year, James Hampton (F-Troop, Teen Wolf) and Burton “Bubba” Gilliam (Blazing Saddles). Also on the list are media guests who’ve had roles in Star Wars, the Harry Potter movies, and Batman Begins.
A highlight of this year’s event is the screening of a yet-to-be released sci-fi noir film, Yesterday Was a Lie.
“We’ll have a screening of the film Friday night. The only time it’s been seen yet in Dallas will be at this convention,” said Ben Daw, event organizer.
Last year, the convention drew about 350 attendees. This year, Daw is hoping for about 500.
“This relaxicon is all about fun, where we just get together and enjoy ourselves. We had a great time last year and this year will be even bigger,” said Ben Daw, event organizer. “We’ll have about 20 vendors, party rooms and discussion panels during the day when authors will talk about their books and attendees can ask questions of the actors.”
Vendors offer action figures, autographs, comic books and other collectibles as well as costumes, swords and other RPG (role play gaming) equipment. Comic book authors and artists also show their wares. The event not only provides fun and relaxation for its attendees with games, contests and plenty of socializing, but also serves as a fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Research Fund through the sale of special buttons and an auction.
For more information and registration information, visit www.lazydragon.com or call Ben Daw at 972-948-3320. A flyer for the event is also available at www.visitmckinney.com (see “Things to Do”).
