Dallas-area Starbucks will begin offering a brand-new line of smoothie drinks as soon as Tuesday July 15.
The new smoothie line is called Vivanno, and comes in two flavors: banana-chocolate and orange-mango, with a 16-ounce cup selling for $3.75 to $3.95. This is above and beyond the various flavored Frappuccino drinks.
Smoothies have become a fast-food thing, now sold at Jack in the Box and Dunkin' Donuts; with McDonald's, as usual, coming in last by just now testing smoothies in a few cities and remaining noncommittal about whether they'll make it as a menu item or not. (Smoothies are, after all, somewhat healthy.) Everyone's horning in on the Jamba Juice action.
Starbucks' entry is a mixture of protein and fruit, with 15+ grams of protein, 5+ grams of fiber, and less than 270 calories, with no artificial sweeteners.
Later this year, Starbucks will also introduce a low-calorie iced beverage called Sorbetto that they say is "steeped in Italian heritage", so there's something to look forward to.

The way businesses are run always fascinates me -- how is it that Starbucks is rolling out new products at almost the exact same time as they're closing 600 stores? Granted, the two things aren't exactly equal, but it's still curious to me.

Clearly, smoothies are the wave of Fourbucks' future Alex.
Hopefully the smoothies fail miserably, leading to further closings.
