Despite the dreadful scandal of 2007, the Press Club is forging on with the 2008 Katie Awards.
The banquet will be at the Sixth Floor Museum on November 15. They promise a "first class" banquet (they use the word "libations", so you KNOW it's classy) and have cut the number of categories so that it'll move quickly. They're futilely attempting to ennoble the whole deal by holding it "in conjunction with the 45th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy", and they've recruited drones from the Poynter Institute -- more journalists! yay -- as judges. Keynote speaker is Press Club president and "assassination expert" Hugh Aynesworth.
Despite their stated blah-blah mission about this being for the scholarships (and not just because journalists love giving themselves awards), they're letting anyone who entered the past two tainted competitions get two free entries. (They're also encouraging people not to take the freebie, but obviously they don't know the first thing about journalists.) For anyone else, it's $40 per entry. Submission deadline is Friday, August 22. Finalists will be announced "about October 1". (God forbid they be able to meet an exact deadline. They are journalists, after all. Zing.) Web site is here.
UPDATE: The Press Club is extending the deadline for submissions another week, until August 29. And then if they STILL don't get any submissions, they'll just hand out the awards to any remaining journalists who still have jobs. Seriously people, give it up.

Such negativity. The author whimpers like a schoolgirl that didn't get invited to the prom. Maybe they can take solace in the words of another negative person.
"Always give your best, never get discouraged, never be petty; always remember, others may hate you, but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them, and then you destroy yourself."

No, I think Tyra Banks' quotes are usually more "deep":
"I like love the confidence that makeup gives me. But, like, don't think that makeup gives me confidence, because, like... you have to be responsible with makeup or something? It's like because you are responsible you have to be responsible with makeup or your not going to take responsibility for yourself. Like, y'know?? You know what I mean, right? Like I mean, you have to be smart in order to like understand dumb, ugly people, y'know? Like, I'm so really deep that I like, like I'm so cool"

VyV, this whole Katie thing has been a clusterfook for a few years now. TG's got nofing to be concerned about.
I like, though, that they've chosen to commemorate one of the days that hope died.
