HCG Gallery presents Karen Garrett in an exhibition of new and archival works representing of the breadth and scope of her vision over the last two decades. A pioneer of the monumental sculpture movement, Garrett has worked with clay, raw cardboard, resinated cellulose laminate, and stained glass among other media to create her intricate pieces. On August 1st HCG invites the public to a reception from 6 to 9pm as they welcome Karen to HCG Gallery.
Karen Garrett, born May 16, 1966 in Midwest City, Oklahoma to a fire fighter and a church worker. She began her art career designing and constructing gowns for social functions, and later in 1987 developed an interest in clay sculpture.
Karen has shown in many one person and group exhibits including the Kirkpatrick Museum Complex in Oklahoma City, The Philbrook Museuem of Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Wyndy Morehead Fine Arts Gallery, New Orleans, LA, and the Dallas Contemporary. Both Elton John and Billy Joel requested Karen's work for their private rooms while on concert tour at Rice University Stadium.
Karen received her MFA with honors from the University of Houston, taught art at four Houston area churches which incorporated a ten week art program Garrett developed for her art ranch called, Godstone Ranch. In 2005 she started a part-time professorship instructing Fundamentals of Drawing for the Art Institute of Dallas.
