UPDATED: Lakewood restaurant Kitchen 1924 closed
Kitchen 1924, the hip restaurant in the center of Lakewood, closed on Sunday.
The restaurant is boarded up and locked down in that way that tells you a mile off "closed." It comes as a bit of a surprise since, unlike the scads of other restaurants that have closed in Dallas in the past few weeks, Kitchen 1924 was actually doing pretty decent business.
Owner Shawn Horne could not be reached for comment.
UPDATE: Here's the press release (and it incorporates the hilariously pompous "Foo Fighter" reference of which owner Horne is fond):
Lakewood restaurant Kitchen 1924 closed its doors Sunday, July 27 following brunch service. After nearly three years, owner and Fighter of Foo, Shawn Horne, had to shutter his popular eatery due to underfunding and the rising cost of products across the board.
"Opening the Kitchen has been one of the greatest experiences in my short life and it will be missed," says Horne. "I want to thank all of my 'raving fans' who have supported the restaurant. Keep your eyes peeled and mouth watering for my next culinary adventure."

Thank you for adding that link. I'm grateful to hear about where the fallen at 1924 will be ending up. I enjoyed Michael Durkin at 1924 and will enjoy his pizza up North. I only hope he brings one of his pizzerias to the 'wood.

Not surprising. I went last Thursday for happy hour/dinner and was shocked to say the least. My girlfriend asked for a beer, but our waiter told us they didn't have any beer. None! How about a glass of white wine? Nope! Only bottles of chardonnay. How about a Grey Goose martini. Nope! All they had was McCormicks well vodka. What about the happy hour? Well as for that, we couldn't get happy hour prices unless we got up from our table and ordered from the bar. We were sitting about 10 feet from the bar, but our waiter insisted his computer couldn't ring up happy hour drinks. So we sat at the bar, ignored, for almost 5 minutes while the bartender talked on the telephone. We left shortly thereafter.

Unfortunately I never made it to this part of the de-eff-dubya. But, I have always heard and read about good things from the Kitchen. Now this makes me hungry for more clever and humorous postings on their doors. Bill Stein has one- what a great thank you for his/their patrons. A corporate WE ARE CLOSED, posted as a last duty, shudders, is an ugly sign of the times.

Scott, I'm actually working on a website right now dedicated to Dallas bars, specifically dives...sadly enough we just decided to dedicate an entire section to the "fallen" or closed. It's so sad, seems as if we hear about a new one every other day.
