Jenny the elephant’s move to Mexico still a go — for now
After visiting Africam Safari Park in Mexico yesterday, Dallas Zoo director Gregg Hudson says plans to move Jenny the elephant there by the end of the year haven't changed. Hudson was reportedly "impressed with the facilities that we've seen and the expansion that they're doing" at Africam.
Animal activists still hope to convince the zoo to transfer Jenny to the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. A rally was held this past Sunday at the entrance to the Dallas Zoo by a group calling themselves Concerned Citizens for Jenny.

So, what is the Dallas Zoo getting in return for Jenny? Anything?

I believe they are getting scorn.
Lots of it.
Deservedly so, I think.

Supposedly, not getting anything. However, I guess what they're not getting is grief from the AZA by sending Jenny to another AZA organization. It just sounds fishy that the only reason they continually use for sending her to Mexico is the fact that it is an AZA facility. Not that it's nicer, or will be better for Jenny, just that it's AZA. They've never really said (from what I've heard) anything positive about Africam other than its accreditation - which doesn't really mean much from what I can tell.

Elephants in general and Jenny in particular are not best served by the applicaton of AZA standards ~ at either the Dallas Zoo or the Africam Safari Park in Puebla. While it is commendable the zoo has recognized it cannot meet Jenny's needs, neither can Africam. Elephants walk up to 30 or more miles per day to engage in natural behaviors like foraging, feeding, exploring and socializing. Jenny is an elephant that is fearful of and reactive to loud noises and zoo officials have decided Africam meets Jenny's total care needs!? The Elephant Sanctuary, accredited by The Association of Sanctuaries, spent almost $2 million in 2006 on elephant care. Zoo officials say they have Jenny's best interests at heart. Then why is their decision influenced by AZA politics? There can be little doubt that Jenny deserves the tranquility offered by The Elephant Sanctuary and not then noise and limited space offered by Africam.
