Citizens’ vote for new name for Industrial Boulevard a sham

The Dallas City Council's supposedly egalitarian move to let Dallas citizens vote on the new name for Industrial Boulevard was really just a farce. Several city council members, who have the final say on the matter, have stated that they will accept no name that doesn't reflect the street's proximity to the Trinity River, i.e. Riverfront Boulevard, Trinity Lakes Boulevard, Trinityview Boulevard or Waterfront Boulevard.

That basically tells the 25,000+ people who voted that their opinions don't matter and leaves those who voted for either Cesar Chavez Boulevard or Eddie Bernice Johnson Parkway totally out of luck. Way to build goodwill to the community, Dallas City Council.

everything about this story makes me want to smack the city council... from this circle-jerk vote to Dwaine Caraway's complete disrespect for voters' say to this boondoggle: "...members of the city staff are touring Vancouver, British Columbia, this week for a first-hand look at urban waterfront development." lemme guess: a trip financed by taxpayer $$.

these guys blow

Well, at least when the whole thing floods it'll submerge the aptly-named "Waterfront Boulevard" and no public figure's name will be tarnished(?)

DC, says:

What a great summer for Dallas City Council. It must be a real blast to work there.

First, they get to take their spouses for a tax payor floated trip through Asia. Who wouldn't like that? Let's make nice with China - hey, shut up you monks with your stupid ululating! Maybe some brisket coated batons will make you forget all about being occupied.

Then, hey, let's build a hotel! Great idea! No one else in the world could do it but us! Yep, I can see it now: thousands of Smurf aficionados walking across I-30 with their white long johns and touques to my very own Marriot.

This is followed up by did anyone notice we're losing a million a year on Reunion?? We definitely need to fight to keep that place open! Why the hell not?

...aaannd now the "Screw You Citizens" campaign continues in a follow up to the Trinity River Yes Means No Means Yes referendum with a fake rename the street campaign. I guess "Jail Blvd" is out even though it's probably the most apt.

Except, a bunch of them are too busy out in VanCity eating sushi and getting foot massages on Kits Beach to even pretend to care.

I am really impressed every single week.

While I'm outraged in principle, I couldn't really give a crap what they call a road that I drive down maybe twice a year.

They could call it Taj Mahal Drive and it would still look like sh*t when they change the signs.

If the City Council took half the time to figure out how to make the Trinity River not smell like complete s%*# as they do trying to name a road, then maybe all this water front development would make sense...

That would mean dredging out all the feces, dead prostitutes and shopping carts. Clearly not in this year's budget.

Oh, but look forward to that whitewater kayaking course!

Michael Davis, says:

Scott, I welcome disagreement...it's all good! However, I thought the Trinity naming process was widely known.

I apologize in advance on the wordiness but I'm distracted b/c Barack is about to proclaim victory on CNN.

Anywhoo, this is how it works...

The online vote was meant to gauge public sentiment and I believe this was all public information as part of the naming process. If one name rises above the other, then CPC members and City Council members will certainly take note.

In this case, the City Plan Commission (which includes me) will vote on a name out of the finalists and recommend the winner to City Council.

Actually, I will vote in the first two steps since I'm on the CPC subdivision committee(which is the first step in approving a Dallas street name change) which makes a recommendation before it goes to the full CPC. The full CPC can agree or change it.

Finally, The City Council can pick a name of their choosing. They can agree with our recommendation or make their own.

I know which one I like best, and any of you are welcome to observe CPC that day (or any other day) to check it out.

Mike D, with all due respect, what the hell is the point of a poll if you're going to disregard the results and do what you want?

Sucks to all the political mumbo jumbo (which is precisely what your comment says to me) - don't effing make it a poll if the results are entirely meaningless.

Having just read the email concerning the passing of W.A. Richardson, I hope the City Council will consider renaming a street in his memory.

Scott, I didn't create the process. I just wanted to let the PegNews folks know how it worked. A lot of times, our segment is not informed about how the city processes really work, so I tried to speak on it.

I'm with you Rick. I have been surprised at the amount of coverage this story has received.

John McClelland, says:

Just for fun, it should be noted that anyone and everyone can vote in the phone poll. All you need is a Dallas zip code. So there could be 18,000 people in Alaska calling in to vote for Mallamute Way. So that is probably why the Council isn't going to take it terribly serious. And for the record, I don't live in Dallas anymore but I called in to vote for Cesar Chavez at the behest of a friend.

Dave Neumann and city staff touring Vancouver -- arguably the most beautiful city in North America -- to get ideas for urban waterfront development in a friggin' floodplain?!

Bwaaaaahahahahahaha! These people really are first-class IDIOTS!

Next boondoggle: Carraway and city staff touring the Burj Al Arab in Dubai to get a idea about luxury convention hotels for here.

Scott Doyle, says:

What the hell, Bill - don't give them any ideas!

Mike D, simply seems like a huge waste of effort and time to have options that absolutely won't be picked by people making the final decision. If they've got such a hard-on for something relating to their precious Trinity project, why have any other options?

Matters b/c it's just another example of blatant inefficiency in city council processes.
