Tarrant County College appoints new dean of liberal arts at southeast campus in Arlington

Tarrant County College has named long-time educator and Associate Professor of English Jerry B. Coats dean of liberal arts for the Southeast Campus in Arlington.

Coats has taught for 12 years at TCC, where he was a recent nominee for the Chancellor’s Award for Exemplary Teaching, the College’s highest faculty honor. During the 2006-2007 academic year, he travelled to Europe on a faculty development leave to re-enact a Medieval pilgrimage. As a high school instructor, Coats was twice named Teacher of the Year and was designated Teaching Fellow of the Year at the University of North Texas.

His academic honors include the Van Arsdel Prize for Publication in Victorian Periodicals, the Texas Best One Act Play Writing Competition, and the Best Shakespeare Presentation at the South Central Renaissance Conference. He is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Phi Graduate Honor Society.

Coats is a Ph.D. candidate at Texas Christian University and has completed coursework for a Ph.D. in history from the University of North Texas, where he earned a master’s in English. He has a teacher’s certificate with a major in English from the University of Texas at Arlington and a bachelor’s with a double major in classical civilizations and modern European history from the University of Texas at Austin.
