Some of you may have noticed that I haven't posted a weekend round up of art events in a few weeks. This is because we now have a whole separate category that lists only art openings! If you're a gallery hopper, bookmark the link because that's the page you want to check every weekend to see what's opening and where the receptions are. If you lose the think, you can find it on any event page There will still be a monthly roundup of cool art events (deemed cool by me, so if you think something is cool and should be listed either post a comment or shoot me an email). I know, it's a lot to ask you to remember an event happening at the end of the month. But you can click on the link (which I have so thoughtfully provided for ya) and add it as a favorite to help you remember. So here it is, cool things to do involving art this month:
June 6-7

A museum guest checks out the cast of a T rex skull.
- Brad Cloepfil, the architect that designed the new Booker T. Washington facility, is giving a lecture at the DMA discussing the facility and some of his other works.
- Texas Sculptor Karl Umlauf is opening a show at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center. This should be a goodie. Dallasites, I know gas is expensive but make a day out of it. You can check out the new Fort Worth Museum of Science and History dinosaur exhibit, "Dinosaur Roundup," at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame while you're out there. (Remember, the FWMSH is couch surfing at the Cowgirl Museum while they are building the new facility)
- and/or is opening the Cory Arcangel / Olia Lialina and Dragan Espenschied exhibit, which runs through July 19.
- Studio Fling is opening their first annual environmental awareness show, Fling Goes Green. A portion of all sales will go to Heifer International an organization dedicated to ending world hunger and raising environmental awareness.
June 13-14

- It's time for the City Arts Celebration in the Dallas Arts District! Music, dancing and free admission to the museums. Seriously, this something to check out. It's all free. You know, besides the $4 gas it takes you to drive there. Although on Friday I believe there are free buses. So there. No more excuses. The event runs Friday through Sunday in the Dallas Arts District.
- The Marsden Hartley exhibit opens at the Amon Carter Museum. This exhibit features nearly fifty works from Hartley’s New Mexico period. Gotta love those pretty paintings of the Southwest.
- Works by Emergent Artists opens at Space Studios. This show is to show that art is not dead in Deep Ellum. The exhibit features photography by Dylan Hollingsworth, Fred Holston, Desirae Embree, and sculpture by Sergio Garcia and Shane Rydenour.
June 20-21
- Gallery 2910 is opening a show featuring emerging and career artists that are Texas A&M alumni. I know, it seems strange seeing as how TAMU doesn't really have an art program, but it doesn't mean that artists don't go there too sometimes. The opening reception also doubles as an Aggie meet up. So we can all be adults, get over that old college rivalry (if you have one) and support the arts while resisting to yell "Hook 'em" at the opening. And note this reception is NOT over the weekend, it's the prior Wednesday, the 18th.
- 21 opens at Photographs Do Not Bend and runs through late July.
- Conduit is opening a show featuring the work of James Michael Starr.
June 27-28
- mighty fine arts is opening an exhibit featuring works by Kelly Moran and Kate Rivers.
- ArtLoveMagic is putting on a Girl Show at South Side on Lamar. There will be music, spoken word/poetry, and of course a lot of art being made.
Other On-Goings and Goings-On
- There is a little shindig for the UnScene Tour at the W on the 11th showing photography from five local artists.
- The Dallas Contemporary has a new exhibit for the summer: Chick + Clix: mostly women photographers. I like how it's "mostly women." They had to have some dude's photos in the exhibit so it couldn't be all women? It still will be cool to see life from the view of (mostly) women.
- Tracy Hicks' "Global Warming: still/LIFE" is on display at the MAC through June 21.
- Dunn and Brown is showing I-35 Biennial, a group show, through July.
- The Goss-Michael Collection has works by Tim Noble and Sue Webster on display through the end of summer. This is a good one to check out on one of those days when you're just plain tired of our consumerist way of life. (This happens to me usually every time I'm cut off in traffic by an annoyingly large SUV as if I don't have somewhere to be too. Damn consumerists. *Sigh*)
- HCG is featuring art with a primal theme, all from nationally renowned artists coming out of San Antonio. The show features a mix of installations, photography, paintings and sculpture.
- The Trammell Crow is showing a Smithsonian exhibit that looks great. Documenting China: Contemporary Photography and Social Change runs through the end of September. I bet you a dollar it's cool.
