Should we have seen this coming? Perhaps. Please refer to exhibit A, a photo from April 2007 in which Picnic was nowhere to be found at a P.P.T., Hal Samples, Apple store gathering. The seeds of contempt may have very well been laid before our own eyes.

Should we have seen this coming? Perhaps. Please refer to exhibit A, a photo from April 2007 in which Picnic was nowhere to be found at a P.P.T., Hal Samples, Apple store gathering. The seeds of contempt may have very well been laid before our own eyes.

P.P.T. is splitsville, done, over, and the hip-hop community is more or less confused as how to react. A long-running thread on the DFWHipHop forum shows some bickering back and forth amongst the trio, whilst other posters egged the situation on or decried those who egged the situation on.

A more congenial view of the break is provided in Pikahsso's quotes to the Nightlife blog in which he explains the split as a group of guys pursuing their solo careers. Picnic, however, provides a slightly less friendly version, pointing out that there were many differences of opinion and that he felt left out on important decisions. The break comes a mere two and a half months after the group released their much anticipated and celebrated Denglish record.

The break itself is a sad moment for the local music scene, particularly for a struggling hip-hop scene, though not the most surprising part of this story. The most shocking thing to me is that Pikahsso, recognized for making P.P.T. the most internet connected group in Dallas, has yet to blog on this development. Pikahsso, what up?

UPDATE: After speaking with Pikahsso, I just want to reiterate that while there may be some natural tension that occurs when bands break up, from his mouth to my ear (via radiowaves?), there is still a lot of love between the members. He had nothing but positive things to say about Tahiti and Picnic, reminding people that all three of them have their specialties (Picnic's beats, Tahiti's videos) and that they still talk to each other.

We also got to talking about some of the other projects that Pikahsso is working on, of which there are several. The most prominent for the time being are his American Weirdo Pixtape movie, which he defined as "Purple Rain meets Pikahsso," and the upcoming release of his Blew. album (get it?).

P.S. The photo above, yes, it's a joke. Picnic was there for the performance. No seeds of contempt laid that day... that we know of.

Bands! I've been in a lot of bands in my life, and I can say from experience, it's one of the most difficult things you'll ever do. A group of artistic, creative, sensitive, aspiring musical individuals is tough to manage. Tough to keep them motivated and all working on the same page.
Throw in a bit of success and the desire to do their own thing and you've got a bunch of folks dying to get lose from the situation.

It's not for the faint hearted.

A band is like a marriage, so you could compare a break up to a divorce ... Both emotionally and legally. But sadly it's a common tale... A band release a great first album, the second album isn't nearly as good (not referring to PPT, I haven't heard the stuff), and then they break up for one of many reasons...

I like all of these guys. Pikahsso has been a great friend.

This sucks but I hope they can all work through this stuff and still remain cool.

It's interesting to hear this because Tres Monos in Love had a certain cohesion about it that I'm not feeling in Denglish. I can't quite put my finger on it. This could've been a long time coming.

I'm dissapointed that one of my favorite Hip-Hop groups has called it quits. I wish them each the best on their future endeavors.

The Trains at NorthPark Oh, no! Godzilla got into the Northpark train exhibit! But don't worry, the engineers will have it back up and running in time for your mall visit. And now, BEFORE the big holiday rush, is the best time to see them, before hundreds of drooling children take over the enclosure after Thanksgiving. More info
