UT Dallas has earned federal recognition as a research institution seeking ways to fight threats to the nation’s computer data and information grid.
One wonders if the Fed is aware this is the same UTD that was breached in 2007, exposing 35,000 peoples' social security numbers.
The honor names the university one of 23 National Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Research.
Announcing the designation for the years 2008-2013 were the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.
Presentations to designated centers were to be made at an awards ceremony at the Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education, held at UT Dallas this week.
The National Centers program was launched in September 2007 to reduce vulnerabilities in the national information infrastructure. The program recognizes schools that foster research in information assurance.
The partnership was formed in response to the 2003 President’s National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace, which directs the federal government to develop training and education programs to support the nation’s cybersecurity needs.
Students at universities designated as Centers of Academic Excellence in IA Research are eligible to apply for scholarships and grants through both the Federal and Department of Defense Information Assurance Scholarship Programs.
