Seniors invited to attend free conference on fraud prevention

— Seniors are invited to attend a free conference on how to avoid becoming a victim of fraud. The conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, June 19 at the Temple Emanu-El Tobian Auditorium, 8500 Hillcrest Avenue. A free continental breakfast and lunch is also included.

Dallas County seniors and law enforcement together will present the conference, which focuses on how older residents can avoid becoming the victim of identity theft, mail fraud, Medicare fraud, and securities and telemarketing scams. Speakers from the Texas Attorney General’s Office, Federal Trade Commission, Medicare, Social Security Administration and the Dallas Police Department will also be on hand.

The Help End Auto Theft program will also register vehicles free of charge, and attendees may bring up to five boxes of documents to be shredded, compliments of Action Shred of Texas.

The event is sponsored by the City of Dallas Senior Services, Dallas Area Agency on Aging, and OWL - The Voice of Midlife and Older Women.

Pavel Lishin, says:

"Welcome to the free security conference... please sign in, making sure to write down your social security number..."

Actually, one of the funniest things I saw in college was a presentation on security that did pretty much exactly that. A sign-up sheet was passed around while the presenter was telling the new teaching assistance to never require social security numbers on assignments, and never to write them down, either. The sign-in sheet got halfway across the room before someone finally spoke up and said, "So, uh, why are we putting down our social security numbers on this sign-in sheet?"
