Last weekend to catch these plays and musicals (June 6-8)

Closing weekend for some great shows, so hurry!

It is your last opportunity to see some great productions including 2 shows that star celebs (Tyne Daly & Lorenzo Lamas). So try and see a couple while the time is still right:

  • Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, presented by Runway Theatre. In a plantation house it's Big Daddy's 65th birthday. The mood is somber, despite the festivities, because greed and sins of the past loom amongst the family. Desperate, clawing hopes for the future spar with one another as the knowledge that Big Daddy is dying slowly makes the rounds. Maggie, Big Daddy’s daughter-in-law, has her own interests at heart in wanting to become pregnant, but she also wants to make amends to Brick, her husband, for an error in judgment that nearly cost her her marriage. By evening’s end Maggie’s ingenuity, fortitude and passion will set things right, and Brick’s love for his father–never before expressed–will retrieve him from his path of destruction and return him, helplessly, to Maggie’s loving arms. Rated R. Call 817-488-4842 for reservations ($10-15) or purchase online.
  • Lobby Hero, presented by Second Thought Theatre. This quirky, contemporary comedy is a delicate blend of humor and intrigue set against the backdrop of New York City. Lobby Hero features a fumbling security guard, his uptight supervisor, an eager rookie policewoman, and her morally questionable partner. All are united by a local murder investigation that draws each of them into the fray. Theatre goers are sure to be delighted by this urban tale and its colorful cast of characters. For tickets ($20), contact 972-450-6232.
  • The Fantasticks, presented by Casa Mañana. Hollywood heartthrob Lorenzo Lamas is coming to Casa Mañana Theatre in The Fantasticks! This timeless musical tells the story of a young couple who fall madly in love at the hands of their meddling matchmaking fathers, but soon grow restless and stray from one another. Will their separation provide a deeper appreciation for the love they once shared or create a permanent gulf between them? With music by Harvey Schmidt and lyrics by Tom Jones, this special engagement will be directed by Tom Jones himself, and features the beloved songs “Try To Remember,” “Soon It’s Gonna Rain,” “Much More,” and “I Can See It.” Purchase tickets ($35-65) online or by calling 817-332-2272.
  • Oil!, staged reading presented by Echo Theatre, for 2 performances only. Starring Tyne Daly. It’s 1982. Magritte Holes, the ailing, notoriously outrageous, matriarch of one of Houston’s most prominent oil families, has been hiding out in her bedroom for months. Guzzling whiskey, planning the annual Holes Barbecue, and developing an outlandish strategy to save Texas, and her family’s fortune from imminent collapse. Unfortunately, neither her high-profile guests or her colorful, dysfunctional family have any idea what she has in store for them. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted. Reservations are encouraged by calling 214-904-0500.
