Everything you see growing here requires little or no water and only organic fertilizer. (Is that tree dead?)

Um, I mean, organic fertilizer.

In addition to the fertilizer (with a street value of $20), those recognized as complying with the program will receive a "beautiful" (it says here) sign to post in their front yard. (Or in their back yard, if so inclined, but that would seem to defeat the purpose.)

The Texas SmartScape strategy combines the use of drought-tolerant, native (and/or North Texas adapted) plants with minimal pesticide use, resulting in water conservation and improved water quality while attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. Oh, and the plants in the database of suggested species include many lush and colorful varieties.

Those wishing to participate in the program may pick up an application form at the City of Coppell Parks and Recreation Dept. (816 S. Coppell Rd.). The application focuses on types of suggested plants, use of compost and mulch, irrigation practices and suggested turf reduction methods.

Recognition will be announced during the Bloom'n Hot Tour of CoppellSmartScapes scheduled for Aug. 23 at Town Center (255 Parkway Blvd.).

The Trains at NorthPark Oh, no! Godzilla got into the Northpark train exhibit! But don't worry, the engineers will have it back up and running in time for your mall visit. And now, BEFORE the big holiday rush, is the best time to see them, before hundreds of drooling children take over the enclosure after Thanksgiving. More info
