DALLAS Defenseman Mattias Norstrom officially announced his retirement from the National Hockey League Tuesday after a 14-year career with the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and Dallas Stars.
“Yes, I have retired,” said Norstrom, a veteran of 903 career NHL games. “This wasn’t a rash decision by any means and I comfortable with it. I knew going into the season that this was the last year of my contract and I didn’t want to make a big distraction out of it. The last game of the Detroit series was my final game in the NHL.”
Norstrom, 36, concludes a 14-year NHL career that saw him post 165 points (18 goals, 147 assists) and 661 penalty minutes. In 56 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, the former captain of the L.A. Kings had two goals and five assists for seven points and 54 penalty minutes.
Acquired by Dallas at the trade deadline on Feb. 27, 2007, Norstrom collected two goals and 13 assists for 15 points with 48 penalty minutes in 80 games with the club. He also skated in 25 Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Stars and earned five points (2 goals, 3 assists), all of which came during the Stars run to the 2008 Western Conference Finals.
A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Norstrom ranked second on the Stars during the 2007-08 season with 91 blocked shots and skated in his 900th career NHL game on March 30 vs. Anaheim.
