Lower Greenville community meeting on neighborhood video camera systems set

10

A comment on the Greenland Hills Crimewatch blog has led to an informal agreement between VPNA, BelmontNA, Lower Greenville West NA and Greenland Hills NA to hold a meeting on the benefits and drawbacks of neighborhood video camera systems for crimewatch programs. It will also include a comparison of the benefits/drawbacks of using video surveillance systems with ENP programs operating in many neighborhoods.

The event is co-sponsored by Daily Crime Report, LLC and Omni-Watch Systems.

The public meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, June 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Vickery Towers. All neighborhood associations and their members in the Lower Greenville area are invited to the event. While Omni-Watch generally makes presentations to neighborhood associations on an individual basis, this is the first all-community meeting they are hosting.

Omni-Watch Systems has more than 20 neighborhood systems installed in the Dallas area, plus other communities around Texas. Their first system was installed in the Richland Park Estates near Richland College, and has resulted in a 100% drop in calls to 911 in less than two years. (see Dallas Observer story - "Are surveillance cameras the answer to rising crime East Dallas crime rates?")

Only those persons who pay installation and monthly monitoring fees can view the images (using a password protected access on the PC) in real-time, from a DVR or from the server. The wi-fi cameras are installed in alleys or at the key entry/exit points of neighborhoods, and do not invade anyone's personal privacy. You can see sample videos at Omni-Watch's YouTube site.

Scott Doyle, says:

Unless people start randomly flashing their government issued ID's at the cams in alleys or neighborhood 'entrances', I fail to see what good this will do.

Also, a 100% drop in calls would mean nobody's called 9-1-1 from that area in a couple years. Highly doubtful, unless they're an alien race (let me in on that, btw).

Yeah, I was going to say something about the 100% drop.

Of course if it's true.. the first call to 911 would mean a 100% increase. I doubt they will be so quick to advertise that one though.

Doyle: Some of us have features that make us easier to identify than others. Unless you guys want to put on mohawk wigs to help me stay relatively anonymous, do remind me not to expose myself to any cameras.

I was also going to mention the 100% drop, but some people beat me to the snarky comments. :(

Scott Doyle, says:

Lishin: Just shave it off when you get home. Then wear a wig for good measure. Clearly you've never watched a movie in your life.

I'm not going to shave off my mohawk just because I happed to put on an impromptu live performance of "An Evening With Pavel's Genitals" in front of a camera.

Scott Doyle, says:

Then you're obviously willing to accept the consequences of your taped actions, sir.

Guess you could just take it down and wear a wig over it. Unless you rocked the hawk while renewing your license, shouldn't have much to worry about.
