— Parents have a reason to be happy their kids want to spend time at the mall.

Bookmarks, Dallas’ first children’s library, opened the morning of June 13th with speeches by Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, Dallas Public Library director Laurie Evans and other city officials. It will also be the nation’s first children’s library in an indoor shopping mall.

The walls of the 1,933-square foot space are lined with books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and literary-themed paintings. A custom-made sculpture provides a uniquely interactive visual, serving not only as a reading table, but also providing computer desks and carpeted nooks perfect for curling up in with a good book.

The library is an example of corporations and cities coming together to benefit the community. Atmos Energy played a prominent role in Bookmarks’ creation. The company frequently involves itself in community projects geared towards education. “This is a win, win, win situation,” said Dallas City Manager, Mary K. Suhm.

The opening celebration included a ribbon ceremony followed by story time with Mayor Leppert. Mother Goose, clowns, balloon animal artists and a giant cow also joined in on the fun.

Unfortunately, Bookmarks’ modest and tasteful décor pales in comparison to the neon glow emanating from the Forever XXI next door. Hopefully kids will be able to pull themselves away from the consumerism around them long enough to appreciate the value of a good book.
