Dallas County commissioners to vote on lowering phone rates inside jails
The county was raking in millions of commissions on inmates' calls.
Dallas County commissioners are evaluating a new cheaper phone service inside county jails. The new service would cut the rate charged for a local collect call from the jails in half, from $4.10 to $2 for 15 minutes. Commissioner John Wiley Price has been the one pushing for it since last year when the contract with AT&T was set to expire. The county has been raking in millions in commissions from inmates' collect calls -- 55% of what AT&T brought in. The new contract will probably go to Unisys.
