Man charged in Dallas City Hall public corruption scandal is found guilty of separate charge of housing fraud
DALLAS Darren Reagan, who's already been charged in the Dallas City Hall scandal with extorting money from a developer for former Mayor Pro Tem Don Hill, was found guilty of housing fraud on Friday.
Reagan, who gained fame in the early '90s for organizing protests against discrimination, was acting as a landlord to his mother-in-law and pocketing $40,000+ in monthly government rent checks for five years.
There's a number of delicious items in this DMN story:
- Reagan claimed he was unaware that he couldn't rent a Section 8 house to a relative, even though he signed several documents stating that renting to a relative is prohibited.
- After his mother-in-law admitted to authorities that she knew what they were doing was wrong, they sent a letter to Reagan at a post office box where he was getting the checks. He claims he didn't get the letter.
- After the letter was sent, he stopped depositing the checks to his account and instead merely started cashing them.
