Duncanville will attempt to get legislation passed banning pit bulls

43

— Because of 10 pit bull attacks in 2007 and seven pit bull attacks in the first five months of 2008, Duncanville City Council approved a resolution on June 3, stating that an attempt will be made to get legislation passed banning the breed for local municipalities.

Mayor Pro Tem Dorothy Burton said too many people had been injured and the efforts made to get the legislation passed will be worth it.

Why would you attempt to do something that does not reduce dog bites?

Every major Canine Organization and Professional involved with Canine/Human Interaction is opposed to BSL. http://www.animalfarmfoundation.org/t...
The Experts agree breed specific legislation will not result in a successful approach to community dog-bite prevention.
Here are the Stats for Texas http://www.nationalcanineresearchcoun...
Over the past 43 years (1965 - 2007) there have been 58 fatal dog attacks in Texas, or an average of one to two fatal attacks per year.

Texas is the second most populous state in the country, yet Texas has the same amount of dog attack fatalities as California (most populous state in the country).

At least 17 different breeds/types of dogs have been identified as participating in a fatal attack in Texas.

Furthermore, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:

In 2005, one hundred and ninety-seven (197) Texas children died as a result of maltreatment (abuse or neglect).

In a SINGLE YEAR, 2005, nearly FIVE TIMES as many Texas children died from maltreatment (abuse or neglect) than the TOTAL from ALL dog attacks in Texas over the past 43 years.
Mayor Burton, I think there is a bigger problem than dogs,ANY dogs!

Why not enforce existing laws..(leash/license) and prosecute ALL dog owners who don`t comply.

Target irresponsible owners of ALL dogs and leave responsible owners of ALL dogs alone.

I think you`ll have trouble identifying the "Pit Bulls"

Find the "Pit Bull" in this test. http://www.understand-a-bull.com/Find...

Why take the difficult costly approach that doesn`t work? Responsible owners will fight you in the courts to protect their innocent dogs and rightly so.

They`re getting very tired of this non working knee-jerk reaction by politicians.

Please take the time to educate yourselves on the dogs known as "Pit Bulls" http://www.animalfarmfoundation.org/s...

Listen to the experts. http://www.animalfarmfoundation.org/p... BSL does not work to reduce dog bites.

and learn from the mistakes of others.

The Netherlands has just removed a 15 Yr Ban on the dogs known as "pit bulls" because it did not reduce dog bites. http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/0...

On one hand, I'm pretty sure swimming pools kill more people than dogs do, so we should ban those first. On the other hand, I can count on my thumb the number of people who own pit bulls that bother training them to be friendly, social animals. Yes, it's not the dog's fault the owner is an idiot, but the dog was basically bred to be a killer. You can say "not its fault" all you want, but that doesn't make the scar on my hand disappear.

James Scott, says:

I'm not exactly sure where I stand on this - I personally don't think that banning the breed is really going to do much - as the first commenter suggests - it's going to be difficult to really pinpoint which dogs are considered 'pits' versus mutts, versus look like 'pits', etc.

So let's just say this passes - do you think those previously irresponsible owners will either 1) move to another city where pits are legal or 2) go adopt a poodle-pug mix from the local shelter or 3) take their pit they probably didn't care much about in the first place to the pound and get the next best aggressive dog available - maybe a rot or chow? My bet is on #3. Then you have essentially the same issues, only different breed. What then, prohibit that breed?

Anyway, that's just my take - maybe there are studies out there that show this method works - but are there any studies that show that banning pit-bulls reduce the overall cases of dog attacks (regardless of breed)?

Hello Duncanville.....can you say "Farmers Branch"??

From the internet: "MYTH: Pit bulls bite more people than any other breed. FACT: It is hard to pin down, as accurate records by breed are seldom kept. Those records available show what a myth this is. Farmers Branch, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, has kept accurate records since 1980. During a 7 year period from 1980 through 1987, this is what was recorded. Total bites: 1,593. Pit bulls: 30 bites, or 1.89% of the total. Other studies tend to show the same results and because of so many mongrels that have similar features to the American Pit Bull Terrier, it seems reasonable to assume that the figures are actually much lower."

So with 7 bites in half of the year on people or animals, it looks like humans or animals are about as likely to get bitten by a dog that might or might not be a pit bull as they are to get raped in Duncanville.

Scott Doyle...It's a good thing you included a link to the bald guy, I had no idea what you were talking about. Never heard of him BTW. Don't watch much TV since my antenna starting dropping parts off itself. Reception wasn't that great before that, but now it's worse than when TV first began in my area back in the early 1950s....(Black and white, mostly "snow"). Sometimes a picture, sometimes audio and on a really good day both fade in and out along with the color.

Scott Doyle, I know... ;o) BTW I have grandchildren in their 20's.

You wanna talk r-e-a-l-l-y "old times", my great-grandmother & great-grandfather traveled with their oldest kids (of 10 eventually) in a COVERED-WAGON from Tennessee.

Me, I just remember in the '40s when we only had RADIO.. and then in the 50s came TV but only in B/W and only had shows at night. The rest of the time there was just a "test pattern" on the screen. ;o)

All cars were "stick-shift" when I learned to drive. I then drove 50 long years without having an accident. (Then only because some r-e-a-l-l-y o-l-d lady turned right smack dab in front of me on a green light).

But I digress.....sorry 'bout that.

And with the shamefully accepted fact that I personally cannot discern a ALAPAHA BLUE BLOOD from a RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK nor a BOXER from an AMERICAN STAFFORDSHIRE TERRIER (as posed in one of your previous posts Find the Pit-Bull ), I'm betting any nearby highly scrutinizing Animal Control Specialist would find a frothing online activist close enough to any of the above with rabies to justify "a night in the box."

And while you can always count on me to bail you out, the only advantage of county jail over the pound is that they do give you one phone call that the pound isn't required to without tags.

Maybe you need a more self-destructive vice. This world awareness stuff is gonna kill ya. ;o)

Rawlins Gilliland, says:

I was going to avoid this but many of the sweetest dogs I know are pit / pit mix and some of the worst and most dangerous are as well. Trust me I completely understand Kay's frustration because people see this like they see, for instance, rounding up of 400 plus kids from YFZ ranch because there may be sexual abuse. How they see sex offender postings.........they don't care who gets hurt they just want the problem to go away. 'Err on the side of caution' and voila!

In truth I see the sweetest pit bulls in my neighborhood raised by people who turn them into 'growling guns' (as I called them in a commentary) on purpose; chained in the heat, neglected, abused, in order for them to become a power home guard weapon. Then when the dog is ruined and angry and mean and destructive, they release it on the streets, in the parks, to die or attack. I know this drill backwards and forwards, sadly. I even see good people doing this terrible thing to a good dog. It’s as bad as dog fighting per the dog being doomed.

I know for a fact I could have trained my dog to be vicious. Sure she’s part lab, but she is also part coyote, for God's sakes. And chow and German Shepherd. She's large with teeth that chew a large steak bone like a breath mint. But because I treated her with affectionate discipline and rewarded her love with love, neighbor children knock on my door to see if 'Honey' can come out to play. Everybody loves 'Honey'. But then I did not chain her up, deny her water in the sun, abuse her because I have no power anywhere else as do low class types of all colors.........

I know where these people fed up with violent dogs are coming from but this one size fits all approach is going to be painful to watch.

Media Bias http://www.prweb.com/releases/2007/08...
National Canine Research Council Examines the Pit Bull Paparazzi: Fear vs. Fact

A study by the National Canine Research Council reveals biased reporting by the media, its devastating consequences for dogs and the toll it takes on public safety.

Slanesville, WV (PRWEB) August 25, 2007 -- A study by the National Canine Research Council reveals biased reporting by the media, its devastating consequences for dogs and the toll it takes on public safety.

Consider how the media reported four incidents that happened between August 18th and August 21st:

Clearly a fatal attack by an unremarkable breed is not nearly as newsworthy as a non-fatal attack by a Pit bull August 18, 2007 - A Labrador mix attacked a 70-year-old man sending him to the hospital in critical condition. Police officers arrived at the scene and the dog was shot after charging the officers.

This incident was reported in ONE (1) article and only in the local paper.

August 19, 2007 - A 16-month old child received fatal head and neck injuries after being attacked by a mixed breed dog.

This attack was reported TWO (2) times by the local paper only.

August 20, 2007 - A 6-year-old boy is hospitalized after having his ear torn off and receiving severe bites to the head by a medium-sized mixed breed dog.

This attack was reported in ONE (1) article and only in the local paper.

August 21, 2007 - A 59-year-old woman was attacked in her home by two Pit bulls and was hospitalized with severe injuries.

This attack was reported in over two hundred and thirty (230) articles in national and international newspapers, as well as major television news networks, including CNN, MSNBC and FOX.

"Clearly a fatal attack by an unremarkable breed is not nearly as newsworthy as a non-fatal attack by a Pit bull," says Karen Delise, researcher for the National Canine Research Council.

The National Canine Research Council reports that people routinely cite media coverage as "proof" that pit bulls are more dangerous than other dogs. Delise says costly and ineffective public policy decisions are being made on the basis of such "proof". While this biased reporting is not only lethal to an entire population of dogs; sensationalized media coverage endangers the public by misleading them about the real factors in canine aggression.

About The National Canine Research Council The National Canine Research Council investigates all reported cases of fatal dog attacks in the United States. Serious analysis and discussion of canine aggression cannot be conducted from information acquired from media sources.

For accurate and in depth information on verified cases of fatal dog attacks and the circumstances contributing to these incidents, please go to the National Canine Research Council at: www.nationalcanineresearchcouncil.com
Oh! So the police actually do shoot other breeds when being charged by them??? Amazing! So perhaps this assumed bias isn't a bias after all. Charging dog = dead dog. And perhaps an injured thug as a bonus. These dog owners have fianlly learned how to play "the breed card" like the "race card" as well as the "not my child" card.

As soon as we figure out how to keep all the stupid people on the planet from procreating and owning pets, all will be right with the world. Please wake me when all the morons are gone.

Rawlins,

I'm so glad you decided not to avoid this. Sometimes saying nothing is read as consent/no objection. Perhaps folks just haven't been vocal enough in the past to news like this. Of course it could be we just don't hear of it...

It may be a fairly well documented fact that animal abusers are the ones that sooner or later abuse people. (Before anyone asks: No, I don't have the documentation, and no I'm not gonna look it up for you.) I'd have a hard time classifying this group as "good people", but I do understand what you mean.

Interesting about Honey, Rawlins. She sounds delightful. All my doggies are part White German Shepherd-Red Chow Mix. I used to think the (now) oldest one was part coyote too. I didn't take myself seriously, tho, but the thought did cross my mind many times. She's the right color, and her eyes are closer-set than the others - maybe it's because she is built slimmer?

BTW, If I'm ever in your neighborhood, I'm gonna knock on your door too, to see if Honey can come out and play. :o)

Kay, says:

Pibble,

Even tho this person is in Canada, it's obviously the same everywhere...

(They said:) The media picks and chooses its stories, not because they contain facts vital to the public, but for their ability to attract readers/viewers/listeners which, in turn, allows them to claim higher ratings, and charge more for advertising space. It's business. Plain and simple. We've been told outright, "If it doesn't involve a 'pit bull', it's not 'news'." After Denver, Colorado, recently re-enacted its ban on 'pit bulls', we decided to research dog bite stories in the Denver media. Despite the fact that 'pit bulls' make up just 2.6% of reported bites, nearly 100% of dog biting incidents reported in the Denver media involved 'pit bulls'. Again...we doubt this is any honest or intelligent person's idea of fair and impartial reporting. In reality, non-'pit bull' dogs are responsible for 90-100% of bites, attacks, and fatalities in Canada. ...But you'll never hear that on the evening news.

I've seen where little dogs like Poms, Jack Russells and even Shih Tzu mixes have mauled and killed infants, but you don't see them listed in data reports.
