Coppell plans to train Junior Master Gardeners

The Coppell Community Garden continues to be a hotbed of activity. Literally and figuratively.

"As long as the roots are not severed, all will be well in the garden."
"As long as the roots are not severed, all will be well in the garden."

With temps topping out in the high 90's around the region, even the most avid of gardeners must be thinking twice about digging holes and hauling compost out in the hot sun. Don't tell this to the folks at the http://www.coppellcommunitygarden.org/Coppell Community Garden, though - or to the youngsters they'll soon be instructing.

After awarding scholarships to two worthy Coppell H.S. seniors who plan on pursuing environmental science studies, they are now gearing up to teach kids to become Junior Master Gardeners by exposing them to the art and science of gardening. Embedded in the planting and cultivating wisdom will be good citizen life skills. (Hey, we're talking gullible pre-adolescents: they'll swallow anything at that age.)

Sponsoring/partnering with the Coppell Community Garden's efforts in this regard are the "Tilling Tiger" Junior Master Gardener Club in Commerce, Texas, and the Fiskars Garden Tool folks, by means of a grant. (As in: cold hard green.)

The classes will happen during the week of June 23, with ages 7-10 scheduled to train at 8:30 a.m. and ages 4-6 at 10:30. So at least they'll be done before the heat of the day sets in.

To register your young gardener-to-be for the program, call the Coppell Parks and Recreation Dept. at 972-462-5100.
