Lakewood man plows into car driven by would-be attackers

Email Print Tell us your story Comments (10)

Lakewood resident John Vaughan is convinced he was about to become the victim of a carjacking over the weekend when five men armed with a baseball bat got out of the vehicle in front of him in the 7000 block of Wabash Cir. and headed in his direction.

Without waiting to see whether they just wanted to show him their prized Mickey Mantle autographed memorabilia, Vaughan gunned his engine and smashed into their vehicle, causing them to rethink whatever plans they might have had in regard to Mr. Vaughan.

Remind me not to back semi-retired financial consultants into a corner.

I wonder, will his insurance cover that?

Wonder what kind of cars were involved.

I don't get the thought process on this. Must be one of those "guy things"...what if his (or both cars) car had been made inoperable?

Pavel, an answer to your question might help make some sense of this particular option.

I'm assuming he was driving some sort of big truck, and they were packed into a Geo Metro like baseball-bat wielding clowns. I'd ram 'em. Except I wouldn't aim for their car.

Watch the 'carjackers' file a claim against him for hitting their car. They hadn't done anything yet, so basically he rammed a parked car or something like that.

Oh, I can hear it now. "What...??? We were just streaching - Warming up for the big game! Now we need a new car!"

Maybe the guy was smart and at least waited for them to hit him just once or twice with the bat before he did anything rash.

Meh, considering they didn't exchange insurance...and didn't call the cops...not much they can do about filing a claim. At least, not against semi-retired financial cat.

Fact that they just drove off without doing such things (as normal peeps would) is pretty supportive of the dude's initial concerns, imo.

Wow. Wonder if he was trapped in... I would have just driven away! Like Kay said - what if you ended up with an non-working vehicle and 5 mad guys? Yikes.

He must not have had other options - says he was "backed into a corner". And calls himself a coward - so he's not feeling all Rambo afterwards. It's probably good/lucky that he followed his instincts.

And FIVE guys? What happened to the old fashioned "one with a gun" method? Begs for a joke... "How many bat wielders does it take to carjack you?" As many as will fit in a four door Chevy, apparently.

Well, linked article says he was 'attacked'...even though he clearly wasn't hurt. Also, 5 dudes armed with 1 bat is pretty shifty for a carjacking - can't help but wonder whether this was personal.

Either way, run over the guy with the bat and drive off, imo.

5 thugs, with a bat, in a Chevy...sounds like a weird game of Clue...
