ARLINGTON The Texas Rangers had a close game blown open in the ninth Wednesday night in Arlington, losing 5-2 to the Atlanta Braves at Rangers Ballpark. The loss drops the Rangers back below .500, to 36-37 on the year.
The game was a tight pitching duel until the top of the ninth, when a series of miscues and some old-fashioned bad throws caused Texas closer C.J. Wilson to give up three runs to the Braves. The Rangers could not answer in the bottom of the inning, as Braves closer Mike Gonzalez --pitching for the first time in over a year-- closed them out with little difficulty.
Wilson helped kickstart the Braves' comeback when he attempted to throw out Jeff Francoeur at first. When the throw sailed wildly, Francoeur advanced two bases and the rout was on. An RBI single, a run-scoring triple and an RBI groundout finished out the rest of the inning.
Before the ninth, however, Texas' pitching looked solid. Rookie starter Eric Hurley pitched his second straight quality start, allowing just two runs and five hits over five innings. Hurley, who only has two appearances in his major league career, walked two and struck out five.
Hurley was relieved by Frank Francisco, Jamey Wright and Eddie Guardado, who combined to pitch three scoreless innings, giving up just a single harmless hit and one walk while striking out four.
The Rangers hitters scraped for runs and hits against Atlanta's ever-amazing pitching, collecting just six hits, none for extra bases. Both runs were driven in on singles: Gerald Laird singled in German Duran in the bottom of the third, while Brandon Boggs singled in Marlon Byrd in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2. Both runs came with two outs in the inning.
