Perhaps the heat has gotten to the event planners of our fair city. Seems like everyone found a theme du jour for their event, even if it was somewhat unintentional. Gay Bingo is doing weddings, Turtle Creek Chorale has gone all Andrews Sisters and Lambda Legal is kickin’ it at Eddie Deen’s (How Brokeback!). Or if you prefer attire that’s a little more “Ren Fair,” check out Spamalot in Fort Worth or a screening of Harry Potter in Victory Park.
Holy MatriMONEY: “I Do” Gay Bingo
Saturday, June 21, doors open 4:00 p.m.; game begins 5:00 p.m.
No time for cold feet now, break out your best bridesmaid dress and head down the aisle for cash, prizes and snarky drag queen commentary, all for the benefit of the Resource Center of Dallas. Remember, you promised to honor, cherish and obey. So go!
Tickets: $25; Rose Room (upstairs at S4); www.resourcecenterdallas.org
Mary and a Little Lambda: Lambda Legal’s 2008 Lawrence Celebration
Saturday, June 21, 7:30 - 11:00 p.m.
Celebrate gay times, c’mon. Lambda Legal is throwing a party to note the five-year anniversary of civil rights victory Lawrence v Texas, which our reliable friend Wikipedia reminds us is the landmark United States Supreme Court case that struck down the “booty sex” law that had criminalized homosexual sex in Texas. The fete includes a BBQ buffet, a performance by the Dallas Tap Dazzlers, line-dancing demos from the folks at the Round Up and remarks from guest speaker, Co-Counsel and the attorney who won the case, Paul M. Smith.
Tickets: $50; Eddie Deen’s Ranch; To RSVP or for more info, please contact Carla McKinzie at cmckinzie@lambdalegal.org or call (214) 219-8585.
All We Hear is Radio Ga Ga: On The Air!
Sunday, June 22, 8:00 p.m.
The boys from the Turtle Creek Chorale, along with special guests Denise Lee and Danny Ray, are taking us back to the songs of yesteryear - the golden age of radio. A much simpler time where Bette Midler wore nothing but a military jacket and tap shoes as she sang “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” Hmm, guess that’s what happens when we learn our history from Lifetime TV.
Tickets: $15 - $38; Meyerson Symphony Center; www.turtlecreek.org
Dumbledore does Dallas: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Tuesday, June 24, 7:30 p.m.
If you are brave enough to brave the heat, enjoy a free movie in Dallas’ own mini Times Square, Victory Park. It’s vintage Harry before Daniel Radcliffe starred in Equus showing the world his own “sorcerer’s stone.”
Free Admission; Victory Park; www.victoryparktheatre.com
Night Knight: Spamalot
June 24 – 29
Somewhere there’s a queen with a soul-deep love for Monty Python, musicals and Clay Aiken squealing with delight. Oh, did that description hit a little too close to home? Well, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you only get two out of the three this go ‘round. Aiken is too busy gearing up for his new role as daddy to play Sir Robin in this version.
Tickets: $35 - $90; Bass Hall; www.basshall.com
