Cycling group Bike DFW launches petition to raise awareness of bicyclists in Dallas
Cyclist advocacy group Bike DFW has launched a petition seeking more protection for bicycle riders.
They want to get 100,000 signatures; according to the DMN more than 3,600 people had signed the petition as of Thursday.
From June 8 to June 14, seven cyclists were killed or injured.
P.M. Summer, transportation alternatives coordinator for Dallas, showed the kind of defeatist spirit that seems destined to keep us exactly where we are by saying that the city is looking at areas that could accommodate bike lanes while simultaneously stating that bike lanes are not a viable operation in Dallas because we don't have a consistent street grid and we don't yet embrace cycling as much as other cities do. And with that kind of attitude, we apparently won't be embracing cycling any time soon, either.

For those interested, you can apparently sign the petition online here, in a weird sort of free ticket-buying way.

P.M. Summer's quote is amazingly stupid. He should have just said, "I don't know what you're talking about, and I don't care."

great post and I will certainly sign it and ask all of my friends to do so as well.
PM Summers as "transportation alternatives coordinator" should be fired or sent to Yellowstone Park for smog detoxification and training.

I'm with the others. Someone make PM Summers commute to work every day down Jupiter, NW highway or Turtle Creek and see if he changes his tune on bike lanes.

I am emailing my City Council member and Tom Leppert about PM Summers statements. ( http://www.dallascityhall.com/governm... ) That was RIDICULOUS!!! The whole "We still haven't found that paint that stops cars from crossing the line" excuse for not having bike lanes really pissed me off.

Bicycling in Dallas-? Attempting to commute-? Take my advice: arm yourself. Really adds confidence.
