According to a story in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, day-labor Mexican immigrants are finding that due to the high cost of gas, they can survive as well in the Mexican economy as the U.S. economy.
The cost of gas continues to rise, but employers won’t give employees additional money or incentives to make up for the increase.
The Mexican Consulate in Dallas reports that in the past six months, more than 300 children received enrollment certificates for Mexican schools – as many as it recorded for the entire 2007.

The Trains at NorthPark Oh, no! Godzilla got into the Northpark train exhibit! But don't worry, the engineers will have it back up and running in time for your mall visit. And now, BEFORE the big holiday rush, is the best time to see them, before hundreds of drooling children take over the enclosure after Thanksgiving. More info

I must be missing something. Sure, cost of living down there is lower...but so is earning potential.
What does gas have to do with staying here or going back there?

Well, how do you think they powered those big, uninsured four wheelers that come swerving into your lane?
This should quell the whole wall issue then?

I was also not aware that all that many day-laborers drove. I guess I'm either ignorant or racist, or something.

Well, the story misses essentially the bigger picture anyway: like why we need 5 people running 2 cycle engines to mow our own lawns or how little contractors pay illegals if the price of gas is enough to put them out of the country.

Adding to the irony - people in border areas are now crossing the border to Mexico to fill up their gas guzzlers. Mexico subsidizes gasoline dropping the price to almost half current US rates

So Pavel, maybe someone else will pay for a wall ;o)
DC - yeah, the "otherwise we'd pay $80 for our lawns and $15 for our fancy salads" argument for undocumented workers deftly skirts the real issue of undervaluation of human labor, and now completely unvested residents, eh? I mean, when does "convenience" become decadence?

Add to that I saw a news blurb a few weeks ago that non-US born hispanics now have a higher unemployment rate than US born hispanics forthe first time. And that is mainly due to the downturn in the housing market since many were carpenters, etc.

"non-US born hispanics" Is this the new PC term for illegal immigrants?

Clearly it's a politician's preferred term allowing wiggle room. This way it's implied they're illegal without being labeled as such.

When we bought the house we had quotes averaging $125 a month to mow the lawn with a bunch of old gas mowers that probably hadn't been maintained in years.
I also spent $11 for a pear salad covered in caustic vinagrette at Nodding Dog this weekend.
It's too late.
Bought an electric mower and plan to go xeri.
Maybe the title should read something like: "Mexicans Go Back to Mexico; Americans Screwed!"

12ozfred - you should know better
(specifically than to make me spew coke from my nose and have to explain to coworkers how that can be funny and yet me not be a complete bigot ::Add to Favorites::click::)
And jtmbls, as of 3:25 EST the term "non-US born hispanics" was deemed reprehensibly offensive and should be referred to as "citizenship-challenged" or "other-nationed."

I know, I know, I always have to bring up that trip from South Padre to Austin:
"Uhhh, no, see what we're talking about here is how Asians are different than hispanics."
"Sure, sure, whatever you say"
"You know, slanty eyes and what not?"
"Yeah, yeah, would you mind opening the trunk of your vehicle?"
"Love buffets? Like judging others? Hello Kitty air freshener? Prefer cash to banks? Probably Asian!"
"Whatever."
"Oh, whatever yourself, Officer GOMEZ!!"
dun dun dun
Then, the pepper spray

DC, I prefer to call them Lopez.
And I knew I wasn't going loco back in March! Botched the actual user, but cut me some slack - Donna Chen's initials are DC. =P
DC and cohort need separate accts, imo.
Reading back through some of that thread...what the hell happened to Geoff Keah?
