From 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday, June 27, Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert will be speaking about where he sees Deep Ellum in the next few years (CVS-Pharmacy-future jokes to a minimum, please).

The town hall meeting will be held at the Sons of Hermann Hall, 3414 Elm Street.

Neighbors, business owners and Ellum-lovers can use this opportunity to give their input on current issues affecting the neighborhood.

In addition to Leppert, those "other luminaries" will include Dallas Councilmember Angela Hunt, says Tanner Hockensmith of the Deep Ellum Association.

Questions to the mayor (approved by DEA in advance), will focus less on issues of crime and more on matters of business and development, Hockensmith said.

"We expect Leppert to be asked about future developments in the area," he said. "Community groups and owners want to know what's next."

UPDATE: The full meeting agenda. Note that questions must be submitted in advance.

My big question is if this will be streamed on line, as many of us who live down there actually have to work on a weekday.....

Since they closed Deep Ellum Blues, the only reason I ever go there is to occasionally stop by Deep Sushi for some Unagi or maybe a meal at Daddy Jack's

The closest I get on a regular basis is at Pearl @ Commerce.

I guess what I'm saying I don't really give a sh*t about Deep Ellum anymore. It will never be like it used to be.

I'd probably visit the CVS

Don't worry Scoop - DE probably doesn't give a sh*t about you either. I don't think it has to be what it used to be to be a viable area again.

In other news, does anyone have any transcripts and/or notes/highlights from this meeting?

More of the same ego stroking and platitudes.

Certainly nothing much of any substance was said or questioned.

Scoop- Hey, thanks for your patronage and the mention!

However, I think James may have made the real point here. It's not that Deep Ellum will ever be what it once was, it's now a matter of building it into a viable community again. Hopefully one where residents and businesses can co-exist, maybe even flourish. Keeping the old charm will be a challenge.
