New product Wednesday, in Dallas stores: Town House Flipsides pretzel crackers
The conceit of the Town House Flipsides pretzel crackers -- that it's a back-to-back combination of pretzel on top and cracker on bottom -- is a bit forced, right down to the yellow color on the back of the cracker to emphasize the difference between the two. Yeah right, cracker, we get it.
Especially since the top part -- OK fine, the "pretzel" part -- isn't entirely pretzel-like. It has a pretzel flavor and big crystals of salt, but it's neither firm nor chewy, the two textures one might associate with "pretzel".
It's a gimmick. Luckily for Town House Flipsides pretzel crackers, some of us are suckers for gimmicks.
One of their selling points appears to be that they are lighter than regular pretzels. In fact, they have the same light texture as a Town House cracker. Is there actually a cult that loves Town House crackers? They always seemed marginal, both as something to eat and as a cultural force.
In any case, they do not receive cheese well. They're too flimsy. Spreading goat cheese on them obliterates them. And they don't stand up especially well to hard cheeses sampled.
They are good for one thing, however: peanut butter. They accept peanut butter well and the flavor combination makes sense.
They come in two flavors, regular and Cheddar, which was not sampled.

I must insist that Cheddar be sampled. For, you know, research -- they can't be any worse than the Kraft Mac & Cheese crackers, right?

Doyle has question.
If you haven't already thought of this (or done it), is there going to be a recap at the end of the year about how the New Product Wednesday items fared in the market? If this has already been done, please slap me after linking to it.
Guess similar question applies for your Best Bites favs, too: We gonna get a recap of whether your Best Bites actually turned out to be the best?

hmmm... i'm usually not much for recaps. always looking ahead, to the future, the next new product etc. this car doesn't go in reverse! however, if that is something that would interest our #1 user, i suppose i can look into it. for my year-end wrap-up last december, i did "user restaurant reviews" [cuz i am all about the users, man]. but i am willing to recycle the food i've already eaten.
if i ran into doyle more often - say, at a big Texas de Brazil half-price feed - i could offer some of these crackers and whatnot and let the user(s) weigh in

Anyone but me recall the Mr Phipps Pretzel Crackers made by Nabisco like 15 plus years ago? I was frickin' addicted to those crisp snappin' rounds for everything under the sun (and tongue) and they discontinued them! Whoever heard of a discontinued cracker??? So I ran last year to Kettle's pretzel chips which sounded great but inevitably are crumbled. The Kettle people even sent me a FREE CASE when I called their 800 number to protest a 2.50 bag being a) hard to find 2) crumbled (as in 95% of the time). And they too arrived protected like the Pieta and yet were also crumbled pieces. Go figure? So do I dare hold out hope that a real pretzel in cracker form can again become my passion, my love, my life?

I remember Mr. Phipps well. I dined with him over many a summer camp brown bag.
And Teresa, I'd refer to it as more of a carnivorous feeding frenzy. Coupon's good until July 10th so there's still plenty of time. ;)

Meh, not something I'd groan about if it didn't happen, just thought it would be pretty useful to see what's hot or not after it's been available/open for awhile. After all, I'm frugal enough to have waited out the iPhone market correction. Why not let other peeps test the waters with these n00b products?
