Before the game, the Mavs begged Kidd to shoot more

— The Dallas Mavericks beat a struggling Kings team Friday night, relying on a strong --and rare-- shooting game by their new guard en route to a decisive 115-106 victory at the AAC. The win improved the Mavericks to 4-2 since the Kidd trade and 39-20 overall, just a half game better than surging Houston and a game behind New Orleans for second place in the NBA's most competitive division.

The Mavericks got a rare glimpse of Jason Kidd shooting the ball, as Kidd scored a season-high 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting. The 18 shots were by far more than he had taken in any other single game since joining the Mavericks, the result of pointed pregame encouragement from head coach Avery Johnson. Kidd also added 11 rebounds and 9 assists, coming just one pass away from his first triple-double this time around with the Mavericks.

Dirk Nowitzki led all scorers with 34 points off 15-of-26 shooting, while also adding 10 rebounds, 3 blocks and zero turnovers. Josh Howard 20 points and 9 rebounds, while Jerry Stackhouse tied his season high in scoring with 23 points, the second time he has reached that amount since Kidd's arrival.
