Men’s tennis: Virginia Commonwealth 4, SMU 3
The No. 44 SMU men's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker to No. 21 VCU Saturday, falling 4-3 in Richmond, Va.
The Mustangs won the doubles point, after taking two straight matches at No. 2 and No. 3. Robin Fahgen and Alex Skrypko, fell at No. 1, dropping the decision 8-1 to Emil Lindgren and Sebastien Ripoll. David Kuczer and Adham el-Effendi picked up a huge win at No. 2, defeating Thibaut Charron and Martin Schulhauser, 8-5. Oivind Alver and Chris Hooshyar clinched the doubles point for SMU by securing a hotly-contested win at No. 3, outlasting Bobo Delemark and Stepan Siska, 9-8 (3).
In singles, Skyrpko lost a tough match at No. 3, falling to Charron, 6-4, 6-2. Fiftieth-ranked Fahgen dropped the decision at No. 1, losing to Schulhausen in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, putting the Mustangs back by one. Hooshyar was defeated at No. 4, losing a tight battle, 6-4, 6-4, putting the Mustangs on the wrong end of a 3-1 score.
But SMU rallied back. Kuczer started down at No. 2, losing the first set to Damien Lacombe 6-2, but rebounded to take the point by winning the next two sets, 7-5, 6-4. Alver notched a huge win at No. 5, defeating Ripoll 7-6 (4), 6-3, tying the score at three apiece. Taylor St. Eve dropped a decision at No. 6, falling in straight sets to Delamark, 6-1, 6-3 to close out the match.
The Mustangs are back in action Wednesday, March 5 when they head to Stillwater, Okla. to face No. 15 Oklahoma State.
