Obama sweeps SMU campus mock election

Does this mean he'll win in Tuesday's primary vote, and then in the November general election? (No.)

Last week the Maguire Center Ethics Design Team at Southern Methodist University conducted a non-binding, unofficial, let's-just-see-what-happens mock election in which 495 eligible ballots were cast to determine who has the inside track to the presidency as far as the student population is concerned. (Actually, 520 ballots were cast, but 25 had to be disqualified because they reflected votes for more than one candidate. Bad form, blokes and bloke-ettes!)

Obama came out the big winner, garnering a whopping 75.1 percent of Democratic votes and 45.1 percent of the vote totals. McCain won on the Republican side, with 73 percent of that make-believe electorate.

If the general U.S. voting populace were to follow the lead of these students, this whole presidential election thing would be all over but the counting. But as Dandy Don Meredith used to say, "if ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas."
